How is this Art Deco silver insect pendant made?
Are you familiar with silver metal clay? Silver metal clay contains small particles of silver mixed with a binder. The artist forms the clay into the design she wants. She sculpts it and carves it creating this sleek silver insect.
Next the clay pendant dries, then sanded and fired in a hot kiln. The silver clay particles meld into solid silver called ‘fine’ silver. ‘Fine’ silver, made of 99% silver, does not tarnish as rapidly as Sterling Silver. The patina goes on the silver pendant with buffing the last stage.
A Little Bit of History
Throughout history artists use nature as inspiration for jewelry. The Art Deco period, known for the stylized insect forms becomes the inspiration for this silver pendant. King Tut’s tomb opening as well as motifs from China, India and Japan influence the design of this period and add to the flavor of the period. One never tires of the clean linear lines, the geometry and the graphic quality of the designs.
Care of silver pendant
